“Church”

[box]What an interesting word! It means so many different things to so many different people. What does it mean to you?[/box]

Most people associate the word with a “building.” “Church” has come to mean the “religious house” people enter to attend an hour of worship to God. In this sense our “churches” have become reminiscent of the temples of the Old Testament.

But how is the word used in the Scriptures? It is interesting to note that the Bible never once uses the word to describe a building. Rather, it is always used to describe people. In the New Testament, the church is composed of the souls who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus (Acts 20:28). The church is not a physical building where people go to worship God – it is the people who worship God.

In the New Testament, we see the pattern of the church that Jesus “built.” We at Glen Oaks are simply trying to be this church, fully following the example we can read about in God’s holy and inspired Word (Matthew 16:18).
